International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed around the world each year on December 3rd. ?The theme for this year is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.
It is necessary to recognize and to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities to raise awareness to the real challenges faced by people with disabilities. People with disabilities form “the world’s largest minority”, facing many obstructions in all aspects of life because of a lack of proper resources and as a result, their rights are severely restricted. Areas of transportation, employment, and education as well as social and political involvement are full of barriers for people with disabilities.? They do not enjoy access to humanity on an equal basis with others.
Persons with disabilities have the right to join in public life, but participation is difficult.? Participation by all people is essential to create secure democracies.? Active citizenship and reduced inequalities contribute to a stable society. We must not leave persons with disabilities behind.? We need to ensure that they are offered the same opportunities as others in all spheres of the society.
We must keep promoting an understanding of disability issues and activate support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. We also seek to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
